Are you afraid that you might have gum disease? Gum disease is something that can happen to anyone. It's more common than people tend to realize, but that doesn't mean it's not something to take seriously. In fact, if you find out you have gum disease, it's important to get treated for it and take extra preventative measures. If you don't, you could lose your teeth and go through a lot of pain.

Understanding the Most Common Signs

When a person has gum disease, there are often a few signs that are more prevalent than others. Some people don't notice much of a difference while others may notice bleeding as they brush their teeth or bad breath that is difficult to get rid of. If you're bleeding after brushing or flossing and your breath has an unusually bad odor, you might have gum disease.

Tooth sensitivity could be a sign of the disease. If you are experiencing these different signs, the first thing you should do is visit the dentist. Your dentist would examine your mouth to determine if gum disease is something you're dealing with. He or she may be able to determine how severe the problem is as well.

Treating Gum Disease in an Efficient Manner

If it turns out that gum disease is the issue, the dentist immediately let you know. Your dentist may be able to provide treatment right there in the office, but it would depend on the severity of the disease. If it's in the earliest stages, the best way to treat the disease is to perform a gentle yet thorough deep cleaning of the teeth and gums.

If it's more severe, you may need to undergo a scaling procedure. During a dental scaling, tartar is removed from each tooth as well as under the gums. It's a procedure that some dentists can perform, but if the problem is too bad, your dentist may provide a recommendation for you to see a periodontist who could complete the full treatment for you. The periodontist may also provide a prescription for a topical gel used on the gums to fight off any infection.

It's often possible to reverse the gum disease, but only if you're willing to see a dentist and seek treatment for the initial problem. If you do end up receiving treatment and getting rid of the gum disease, make sure you continue to take preventative measures. These measures would include brushing, flossing, and using an antibacterial rinse in your mouth at least twice a day.
